History of Hong Kong (1800s–1930s)

Hong Kong (1800s–1930s) was a period largely dominated by the aggressive expeditionary expansion by the British Empire.〔Wiltshire, Trea. (published 1987 ) (republished & reduced 2003). Old Hong Kong – Volume One. Central, Hong Kong: Text Form Asia books Ltd. ISBN Volume One 962-7283-59-2〕 After invading the territory in 19th century during the Opium War, the British gained land in a series of unequal treaties. Early social and economic problems existed in the colony, as there were drastic differences between Eastern and Western philosophy and culture. Nonetheless, Hong Kong seized the opportunity to become one of the first parts of East Asia to undergo industrialization.
